Musings

I’m sorry but what the HELL happened to respectful competition? Did everyone just decide this year that we would throw out the tolerance and freedom of speech this country was founded on?

I’m getting so tired of people calling Mitt Romney’s supporters “fucking idiots” and Obama supporters “blind socialists.” I remember back when McCain was running for office, one of the most famous things he said was “(Obama) is a decent family man and citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with, and that’s what this campaign is all about.” This election should NOT be about calling the opposing supporters “idiots” “socialists” “fucking morons” or any variation thereof. Doing so only splits this country more and more in two, and it is only through unity, not division, that we create change.

I hear my Romney friends say that anyone who votes for Obama is a blind idiot who encourages socialism. I’ve heard my Obama friends say that Romney supporters are idiots and sheep who care more about money than people. This whole thing is spinning WAY out of control. Presidential elections are fierce, aggressive, and competitive, but they DON’T HAVE TO BE INHUMAN. You don’t have to completely tear down the value system of someone who believes in the opposite candidate you do. You don’t have to call the other party “fucking idiots” or view EVERY action they carry out as the reason why their win would destroy this country.

This nation values freedom of speech. With the First Amendment we guaranteed that people were allowed to say what they want to say without fear of punitive legal measures. But if what you want to say is full of nothing but hate, anger, and the desire to see the defeat of your opposer in the most humiliating way possible, what gives you the right to exercise that freedom? What makes YOU the person that is all of a sudden so much more righteous than everyone that your word is law? Passion for issues is great, but it doesn’t need to come at the cost of integrity and the vilification of someone who simply believes differently.

And that goes for both sides. Romney supporters, go hug a Democrat. Obama supporters, same goes for you. Go hug someone on the other side. Go let them know that no matter who wins, this nation will always be a nation that values tolerance, that this will be a nation that stands on the unshakable pursuit of justice, the individual happiness of all citizens, and the desire to make the world a better place. Go find someone who believes just as strongly as you do in the opposing issues and say to him or her, “You are a decent person with the same amount and strength of passion I do, we simply have disagreements.” Go HUG that person and remind them (and yourself) that this is a nation that will persevere and continue to be a great nation no matter which side we are on.

I support both Barack Obama and Mitt Romney and accept either as our new Commander-in-Chief.

If you’re a person who takes the nation’s issues as seriously as I do, then you’ll understand just how difficult it is to say what I just did. I invite you to hate me if you will, as moderates are more despised in this nation than anyone else, but I sincerely HOPE you won’t call me an “idiot.”
